The Neurosurgery Department of Navy general hospital welcome you!
Major Characteristics:
The operation for intractable epilepsy
We treat patients with intractable epilepsy in many ways, which spread
from one operation method in 1985 to 6 kinds of method, including callosotomy,
hippocampectomy, multiple subpial transection (MST), depth electrodes
in epilepsy surgery, lesion resection and bipolar coagulation on functional
cortexes. Our result shows that selecting right methods base on the
station of patients; those operations are effective on seizure control
and as safe as regular seizure surgery. The total effective rate was
83.5%.
Functional Neurosurgery
Functional neurosurgery utilizes computers to precisely target locations
and abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord in combination with minimally
invasive, surgical approaches. Utilizing this type of innovative surgery,
neurosurgeons at NGH perform deep brain stimulation, pallidotomy and
thalamotomy for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and dystonia.
They also use this cutting edge technique in the treatment of patients
with facial nerve disorders, epilepsy and pain.
The intratumoral irradiation for brain deep tumor
The treatment of intratumoral irradiation is used in oringal and recurrence
brain tumors difficulty to treat, including astrocytoma, malignant meningioma,
metastasis and craniopharyngioma. This kind of operation has advantages
with minimal invasion and good results in the treatment of deep brain
tumors. The total effective rate were 90.9%, complication rate were
2%.
Robotic-assisted neurosurgical operation
This becomes an important choice of neurosurgery using frameless stereotactic
instrument instead of traditional stereotactic frame in Computer Assisted
Surgery (CAS). We has manufactured CAS-R-2 frameless stereotactic instrument
in 1997 by ourselves. 1500 cases have undergone surgical procedures
using the robotic system. The effective rate was 93.4% without serious
surgical complication. The robot system locating precision error in
practice is less 1.0mm. Comparing the traditional stereotactic operations,
this method has some advantage, such as releasing the patient’s pain,
making operation easy and increasing the safety and effective of operation.
The robot system is stable and safe, providing a new platform for neurosurgeons
and it becomes a new neurosurgical tool. We have manufactured a robotic
telemanipulation system, Our Hospital and Yan’an University Affiliated
Hospital jointly performed successfully 10 operations using the robotic
telemanipulation system. In the future, Frameless stereotaxy and telemanipulation
will facilitate collaboration between surgeons, enhance training, allow
for sharing of resources, and have wide applications in the field of
neurosurgery.
Radiosurgery
This outpatient treatment does not require opening the skull. Instead
it utilizes Gamma-knife, radiation applied with computer assistance
in a pinpoint manner to non-invasively treat lesions of the brain and
spinal cord. Radiosurgery is thus an effective alternative to traditional
surgery. The neurosurgeons at Neurosurgical Center of PLA use this advanced
technique in the treatment of brain tumors; brain metastasis, vascular
lesions (arteriovenous malformation, AVM) and facial pain (trigeminal
neuralgia).
Neuroendoscopic Surgery
The technology includes four types, such as pure endoscopic neurosurgery
(EN), endosope-assisted microneurosurgery (EAM), endoscope-controlled
microneurosurgery (ECM), endoscopic inspection. We used neuroendoscopic
technology to treat intracranial disease, such as hydrocephalus, refractory
hydrocephalus, symptomatic septum, archnoid cysts and pituitary, and
get good results.
Stem cell transplantation (SCT)
Neural stem cells (NSCs) are a kind of special cells possessing self-renewal
and multi-directional differentiation potential. Under special condition,
it can proliferate and differentiate to special direction (such as neuron). This
makes it possible that the substitution treatment of neural stem cell
in CNS injury disease and degenerative neural disorders. Our research
shows that this treatment make a good progress in the treatment of Parkinson’s
disease, residual of cerebral infarction, cerebral atrophy, cerebral
palsy, NCL(neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, Batten disease) and encephalodysplasia.
Other
Neurosurgeons at NGH are famous in the treatment of primary and metastasis
brain tumors, tumors of the skull base, and pituitary tumors. Diseases
treated include meningioma, glioma, astrocytoma, glioblastoma, acoustic
neuroma, angiofibroma, chordoma, cholesterol granuloma, epidermoid tumor,
esthesioneuroblastoma, glomus tumor, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, neuroma,
pharyngeal carcinoma, pituitary tumor, neuroendocrine disorders, and
temporal bone neoplasm. The fetal OEC (Olfactory ensheathing cells)
transplantation can partially improve the neurological functions quickly
in treatment of the chronic spinal cord injury. We use other minimally
invasive method to treat all kinds of cranial disease.
